9 great movies to watch in the fall
With summer now drawing to end, we begin to spend more time inside drinking hot chocolate and watching movies next to the fireplace. That's right — it's time to dust off those old DVDs and get cozy on the couch with your loved ones. So check out our list of nine movies that are perfect to watch at this time of year...
1. When Harry met Sally...
Plot: Harry and Sally meet after they both graduate from college, but don't quite hit it off. The movie jumps through their lives as they both search for love, bumping into each every five years. In the end, they form a close friendship, as they both like having a friend from the opposite sex. However, this is when they're confronted with the problem: "Can a man and a woman be friends, without sex getting in the way?"
Why is it a good movie for the season? The most beautiful scene takes part during a wonderful fall afternoon. It's also a hilarious romantic comedy that talks love and friendship in the most delightful way.
2. The Lord of the Rings film series
Plot: Do we really need to remind you? These movies are about magic, wizardry, war, love and above all strong friendships. And if you haven't seen them yet, get to it this fall!
Why? The dim lighting, creepy forests and misty conditions provide the perfect setting for bunkering down during those gloomy fall evenings. Halloween is also around the corner, so it's perfect timing!
3. Notting Hill
Plot: The life of a simple bookstore owner changes forever after a chance meeting with a Hollywood star. Both hilarious and moving, this movie follows the classic love-at-first-sight formula.
Why? Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant are a winning duo whenever we need cheering up. British eccentricity also never grows tired!
4. The Horse Whisperer
Plot: A teenage girl is left traumatized after being hit by a truck while horse-riding. To help heal her troubled daughter and the horse, the mother takes them to Montana to recuperate at the ranch of a horse whisperer, a horse healer with special talents.
Why? The Horse Whisperer captures the Montana countryside in all its breathtaking glory. This movie also stars Scarlett Johansson in her first major role.
5. Hocus Pocus
Plot: Halloween is approaching and it's been 300 years the Sanderson sisters' execution for practicing witchcraft. After unintentionally being brought back to life by a new guy in town, the sisters have just one night to secure their continuing existence.
Why? This '90s movie is still brilliantly funny and gets us in the mood for Halloween.
6. (500) Days of Summer
Plot: Tom, an aspiring architect, falls deeply in love with Summer, who he believes to be out of his league. While Tom is a great believer in the concept of soulmates, Summer feels there's no such thing as true love and isn't looking for romance.
Why? Though the movie deals with break-ups, it's still incredibly funny at times and features some truly moving scenes.
7. The Red Turtle
Plot: A man is shipwrecked on a deserted island. While attempting to escape, the man is frustrated to see his plans scuppered on three separate occasions. That's when he first meets the red turtle, which changes his life forever.
Why? This critically-acclaimed animated movie is beautiful from start to finish and received a whole host of awards. You'll also have trouble holding back the tears at the end!
Plot: This documentary captures our planet's diversity and goes some way to showing how all of the world's problems are in some way interlinked.
Why? Yann Arthus-Bertrand's movie uses stunning imagery that carries a strong message. From time to time, it's also important to watch movies that get you thinking.
9. Legends of the Fall
Plot: An army colonel lives in the Montana wilderness with his sons, Tristan, Alfred and Samuel. The family encounters tragedy when Samuel is killed in World War I. Tristan and Alfred survive their tours of duty, but both men fall for Samuel's gorgeous fiancée soon after they return home.
Why? The clue is in the title! The movie brilliantly shows how intense rivalry can break down even the closest of families.
